The shift from Google Assistant to Gemini on Android phones will take longer than originally planned. Google has confirmed that it is revising its rollout schedule to allow more time for a smooth user transition.
Earlier, the company had said that Gemini would replace Google Assistant on most Android smartphones by the end of 2025. In a fresh update on its support page, Google stated that the transition will now continue into 2026. The company said the revised timeline is needed to ensure a “ seamless transition” for users. No specific end date has been shared so far.
Google Assistant has been gradually phased out since the launch of Gemini, with several Assistant features already moving to the newer AI platform. Over the past few months, Gemini has taken over key tasks such as smart device control. Google has also confirmed plans to expand Gemini across tablets, cars, headphones, watches, and other connected devices.
According to the company, many Android devices have already shifted from Assistant to Gemini, and more users will be upgraded in the coming months. By 2026, Google Assistant will no longer be available on most mobile devices or for download through app stores.
Google also confirmed that Gemini will power experiences on home devices such as smart speakers, smart displays, and TVs. The original Google Assistant was introduced in 2016 as a hands free voice assistant.
Gemini was officially integrated with Android smartphones in 2024. The Gemini app is currently available in over 200 countries and supports more than 40 languages. It allows users to perform common actions such as playing music, setting timers, and using features directly from the lock screen.
Google said it will share more information about the transition in the coming months and encouraged users to provide feedback during the ongoing upgrade process. Recently, the company also launched an AI video verification tool for the Gemini app and website, further expanding its feature set.
