BHIM introduces Full Delegation feature for trusted digital payments

The BHIM Payments App has introduced a new feature that allows a trusted person to make limited digital payments on behalf of a primary user directly from that user’s bank account. The feature, called UPI Circle Full Delegation, was announced by NPCI BHIM Services Limited on Tuesday. It is designed to make small and routine digital payments easier for senior citizens, young adults, and dependents who may not feel confident using UPI independently.

According to the announcement, the feature makes it possible for households to share financial tasks while allowing the primary account holder to keep complete control and visibility over every transaction.

Under the Full Delegation model, the primary user can authorise a secondary user such as a family member, child, spouse, staff member or dependent to make UPI payments directly from the linked bank account. NPCI BHIM Services Limited stated that the primary user can set a monthly spending limit of up to Rs 15000, choose a validity period of up to five years, and track every transaction for full transparency.

The feature removes the need for the secondary user to have a bank linked UPI ID. This makes the system easier to use for senior citizens or dependents who may not manage digital accounts. Lalitha Nataraj, managing director and chief executive officer of NPCI BHIM Services Limited, said that Full Delegation “moves beyond real time approvals to enable trusted, autonomous payments within defined limits” and reflects how many Indian households operate through trust and shared responsibilities.

NPCI BHIM Services Limited highlighted the groups that could benefit most from this option. Senior citizens who own bank accounts but are hesitant to make digital payments can now transact through a trusted delegate. Young adults and students can manage expenses set within a parent defined limit. Small business owners can allow staff to pay for fuel, tolls or operating costs without using cash. Digitally inexperienced users can rely on the primary user’s oversight while making essential payments.

The organisation has also shared the steps to activate the Full Delegation feature on BHIM. Users must open the BHIM app and go to the UPI Circle section. They must select Invite to circle and enter the mobile number of the delegate. They must add the delegate’s UPI ID or scan their QR code. They must choose Approve a Monthly Limit Full Delegation. They must select the relationship and verify the identity of the person with Aadhaar or other documents.

They must then set the monthly limit of up to Rs 15000 and choose a validity period ranging from one month to five years. They must pick the bank account and authenticate using the UPI PIN. Payments can be made by the secondary user after they accept the request and a short cooling period has passed.

This feature marks a step towards more inclusive and accessible digital payments, especially for households that share financial responsibilities or support older family members.
