6 expert tips to prompt Lyria 3 in the Gemini app for better AI-generated music

Creating original music is now easier with Lyria 3, the latest generative music model from Google DeepMind, available inside the Gemini app. The tool lets users generate 30-second tracks using text, images or videos. Here are 6 practical tips to help you get better results.

  1. Start with a simple text prompt

You can create instrumentals or full tracks with lyrics by describing what you want. For example:

“Create a track about my favorite meal my mom used to make. It was made of rice, plantains and beans. Use an Afrobeats vibe and the singer should sound West African.”

Or:

“Create a 90’s skate punk rock track to tell my roommate Ryan to wash the dishes; high energy, fast drums.”

Be clear about the mood, style and theme.

  1. Upload an image or video

Lyria 3 can also generate music based on visuals. Upload a holiday photo, artwork or even a short video. The model studies details like background, clothing and setting to create a matching soundtrack.

  1. Specify the genre and era

If you are unsure where to begin, define a genre or time period. You can request ‘90s hip-hop, 2000s pop or 1950s jazz. You can also blend styles, such as K-pop with a Motown influence or classical violins in a funk track.

  1. Add instruments and vocal details

You can control instruments, dynamics and vocals. Mention specific instruments like saxophone, synth or piano. Describe how the song should build, such as a soft intro leading to a strong chorus.

You can also define vocals — male or female, baritone or soprano, solo or choir. Add tone descriptors like soulful, gravelly or breathy for more control.

  1. Write your own lyrics or let Lyria create them

To add your own lyrics, start with “Lyrics:” before your lines. Keep them short, as tracks are 30 seconds long.

Example:

“Lyrics: Let’s go (go).”

If you prefer, ask Lyria 3 to generate lyrics around a theme such as love, success or a new happy birthday song.

  1. Download and share your track

Once created, you can download your music as an MP3 or MP4 file and share it on social media or via text. It adds a creative twist to any conversation.
