Between 1 January and 31 July this year, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) arrested 228 individuals, including 27 women, for their involvement in various cybercrimes across India. These arrests were made through the Bureau’s seven cybercrime police stations in Telangana and in other states such as Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Jharkhand.
According to TGCSB Director Shikha Goel, the arrested individuals are linked to 1,313 cybercrime cases across the country, including 189 in Telangana. These crimes together amount to a fraud value of ₹92 crore. “The crackdown led to a 13% decline in reported cybercrime cases across Telangana in the first half of the year,” she said.
The Bureau conducted three major operations during this period:
In February, officials busted a fake call centre in Patrika Nagar, Hi-Tec City, Hyderabad. Sixty-three people, mainly from Gujarat and the North East, were arrested for targeting NRIs and US citizens through fake tech support and legal scam calls.
A 10-day cyber fraud operation in Surat, Gujarat, held between 1 and 10 May, resulted in the arrest of 20 individuals. These suspects were connected to over 60 cases in Telangana and 515 across India.
In June, the Bureau’s Child Protection Unit arrested 15 repeat offenders for possessing and circulating child sexual exploitation and abuse material. These arrests followed 57 cyber tipline complaints.
The accused were involved in a range of crimes, including 66 in fake call centre cases, 77 in job and investment scams, 15 in child exploitation offences, 18 in cyber slavery rackets, and others in SIM box fraud, online trading scams, identity theft, and digital arrest cases.
Among those arrested, 149 individuals were between 18 and 30 years old. Their educational backgrounds include 49 graduates, 18 B. Tech holders, and one law graduate. Many were found to be students, software professionals, private employees, and bank staff.
Citizens are advised to stay alert and report suspicious online activity by calling the 1930 helpline or visiting cybercrime.gov.in.
